Hello interweb, Nate here! So a while ago, a Tumblr page called The Hawkeye Initiative was started in wich people attempt to show how ridiculously women are drawn in comic books. Now if you ever read comic books, you’d know that this isn’t a gendered problem; and in my opinion, it isn’t a problem at all. Now sometimes these drawings do point out a genuinely ridiculous piece of art, but a lot of these it’s a very simple formula: take a reasonable drawing of a woman, draw Hawkeye in the exact same pose with the exact same body type and exact same clothes, and give him a kissy face. That should make it obvious why this initiative doesn’t work but I’ll show you some of the art from the site specifically. Now there are 53 pages worth of content on this site so obviously, I’m not going over every image. That plus sometimes an image of a girl with a thong is turned into Hawkeye with a thong and his testicles are hanging out of the sides and I’m sure most of my viewers don’t want to see that (and if you do then the link is above so just check it out for yourself). I’m just going over ten that stands out to me the most and discussing my opinions on that example. Hopefully, by the time you’re done reading this, you should be able to assess my opinions on most of the images there even if you disagree. So with that, let’s start!
Disclaimer: All art is owned by the respective comic book companies and all “fan” art is owned by the creators of The Hawkeye Initiative. I am not in any way, shape, or form responsible for the creation of these images. I am only responsible for the critiques I give to these images.
Hello interweb, Nate here! Little late on this but that’s ok. So just like last year, I’m gonna go over the up coming comic book movies for 2017 and rank them from least anticipated to most anticipated. Pretty straight forwards, right? Alright, lego! (more…)
Hello interweb, Nate here! Yeesh, first my last post and now this. This blog is getting too gay! All jokes aside, quite recently Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds suggested that he would be hopeful for Deadpool to get a boyfriend in the sequel Deadpool 2 since Wade is canonically considered “pansexual” in the comics and I wanted to talk about this when it was first announced but it was such a minor piece of news that I didn’t really bother covering it. However, a few hours ago Greg Weisman, co-creator of Young Justice, recently stated that there are LGBT characters in Young Justice and it’s possible they may come out in season 3. So with two announcements of possibly more LGBT characters in comic book cartoons and movies, I figured I could share my 2 cents on this and maybe next time I can cover something a little less gay lol.
Side note: I’d really appreciate it if you guys would check out the last post I did do since it actually didn’t get as many views as I was hoping for and I really like the project that I’m working on. (more…)
Hello interweb, Nate here! So today was suppose to be the Top 5 DC Comics of 2016, but I’ve been busy and I’m not fully caught up with all the DC comics I’m reading currently. Therefore, I decided to do the comic book movies first and instead of a Top 5 list why don’t I just simply rank them? After all, there were six movies so why not? (more…)
Hello interweb, Nate here! So big news just hit! Warner Bros Animation just announced a confirmation that season 3 of Young Justice is in the works! Honestly, when I first saw the news on Facebook I didn’t believe it since the series was canceled roughly 3 years ago and it looked like hopes for a revival was gone. Even after both seasons were released to Netflix I really didn’t think the show had a chance. However, with a combination of Netflix views and fan protests, we finally got a 3rd season! I’m just super excited that this is actually happening and I can’t wait to see where they’re going to go since the second season ended on a tease of Darkseid and they just ended the Blue Beetle arc so the possibilities are out there. So that’s really all I have to say about this, no need to drag this on more than I can. So with that, have an awesome day and vote for [insert random presidential nominee here] for president 2016!
Hello interweb, Nate here! So recent news broke out where Greg Rucka, the writer of the current Wonder Woman comics, has confirmed in an interview that Wonder Woman was…interested and had romantic relationships with women! Yeah, he really didn’t place an official label on her as being “gay” or “bisexual” but he pretty much confirmed that Wonder Woman is at least queer. So is this a win for LGBT peoples everywhere or another attempt at forced diversity? (more…)
Hello interweb, Nate here! So I’ve reviewed a couple animated cartoons in the past such as Steven Universe and Miraculous Ladybug (Steven Universe probably the best cartoon on right now and still waiting for season 2 of Miraculous) however ironically enough I have yet to review an actual adaptation of a comic book. So let me correct that with a cartoon I just finished binge watching: Legion of Super Heroes! Now in a previous post a while back I said I was planning on reviewing The Spectacular Spider-man. I lied. Now I like to review movies/cartoons/comics/etc. when I just finished viewing them and their content is fresh in my mind so I can remember most of what I have just experienced. The Spectacular Spider-man is a cartoon I watched on YouTube a while back and I couldn’t find the episodes to rewatch when I wanted to review it (probably was taken down for copyright violations). However I have managed to find a cartoon series I actually never seen before and decided to take a crack at it. This is my thoughts! Also while I’ll avoid major spoilers I might give small spoilers here or there. (more…)
Hello intwerweb, Nate here! So Ben Affleck recently leaked a teaser revealing Deathstroke’s costume for the upcoming Batman movie and the entire internet lost it. Now yes it is official that Deathstroke the Terminator is going to be the villain of the the Ben Affleck directed Batman movie. So what are my thoughts on the situation? Well it’s pretty simple: since when was Deathstroke a Batman villain? He’s the Teen Titan’s archenemy! (more…)
Hello interweb, Nate here. So I’m going to try something I’ve never done before: a response post! Now I’ve never done a response to anything before besides comic book news but I am subscribed to several YouTubers who does response videos for a living so I thought I could try it out myself. Now this video here was posted 8 months ago at the time of this writing and it is from BuzzFeedYellow. Now BuzzFeed is very well known on the internet so I’ll only briefly explain who they are. They’re a series of YouTube channels that are very pro-feminist, pro-tolerance, pro-acceptance, etc. While none of those are inherently bad, in my opinion at least, they have a reputation for spitting out a lot of low quality videos focusing more on quantity over quality. Now they are a business so it makes sense on a marketing stand point since the more videos you make the more views you get and the more money you make. However this does mean that quite a few of these videos are commonly responded to and are often criticized for their stances on things. Since I talk mainly about comic books on this channel I thought I could take a crack at responding to one of their videos over comic book women. More specifically how artists chose to pose them. Because as we all know, women are constantly objectified in mainstream comic books and men are never drawn with unrealistic bodies or in extreme poses. Now I do want to point out that I will not be taking every second of this video and analyzing every word uttered here simply because I really don’t need to go over when people say things like “I’m nervous” or “I think I can do it”. I’ll go over the important bits and respond to anything I feel needs a response to. So let’s begin, shall we? (more…)
Hello interweb, Nate here. So I haven’t used this Comixplanations segment as much as I originally planned. Ah well. So anyhoo, we have heard from Warner Bros that Ben Affleck is not only playing Batman in the DCEU Batman movies but will also be directing it. Of course you can’t do an MCU-styled DC movie universe without making at least one Batman solo film. We know that Wonder Woman’s movie is in the works (I reviewed the first trailer) and Man of Steel 2 is currently in development (PLEASE make it better than the first movie) and on top of that Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg, and Green Lantern are all getting their solo movies. So with that there’s quite a bit of questions and speculations that we can make while waiting. However while a few of those characters I know very little about (like Aquaman), I do know most of the characters in the Justice League as well as their history and characters. And while any one of them can make a really good movie series given the right creative teams (barring Cyborg really since he honestly needs the Teen Titans to be the least bit interesting), Batman in particular has the potential for a greater movie series than even the beloved Dark Knight trilogy with so many villains and allies that have yet to be used fully in a previous Batman movie. But there’s one ally that I’m really curious on how they’re gonna go about with: Robin! (more…)
