Hello interweb, Nate here! So Fox has stated that Logan (which may be the first Wolverine movie that I’m actually excited to see thanks to X-23) will be Fox’s final movie in their X-Men franchise before they reboot it. Now this has lead to some speculations that the X-Men may be heading back to Marvel in a Fox/Marvel X-Men franchise similar to what Marvel and Sony have for Spider-man.
Now first off I do want to point out that this is just speculation as nothing has been confirmed. However, I thought it would be fun to think about what an MCU X-Men franchise may look like. First off this is the MCU we’re speaking of so I think it’s safe to say that the X-Men movies would be better written, more accurate to the comics, and actually be fun movies as oppose to the grim gritty “Oh my gosh, I’m a mutant and I’m depressed because everyone hates me for being a mutant!” type of films that Fox has made. Now don’t get me wrong, the X-Men franchise does need that prejudice to be featured in their films since that’s part of the reason the X-Men are so complex to begin with. However, part of the X-Men is that they enjoy being mutants and enjoy their powers! They don’t want to change for the world, they want the world to accept them for who they are.
The only problem with this is if they actually succeed in getting the X-Men into the MCU there’s probably not enough time to get an X-Men film out before Avengers: Infinity Wars. Granted they could be introduced in Infinity Wars like how Spider-man and Black Panther were introduced in Captain America: Civil War. But I definitely want to see the X-Men fight in the final battle against Thanos and get some character interactions between the group. I want to see Wolverine meet the Hulk, I want Magneto to meet the MCU Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (revive him first, dammit!), and I want to see the X-Men meet the Guardians of the Galaxy!
OK so how should an MCU X-Men franchise actually work? Well, first off we need a way to introduce them into the MCU. I did mention previously that they could be introduced in Infinity Wars since there’s no time to introduce them before that so I think that’s the best way to go. Perhaps after the Avengers reassemble to face Thanos, Captain America realizes that the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy (who could appear in the movie before the X-Men possibly to warn them of Thanos) aren’t strong enough to face him alone so Cap could point out that the X-Men are a lesser known group of superpowered beings that gain their powers through random mutations and the best place to find the X-Men are in Xavier’s school for the gifted. The Avengers go to meet them and BOOM!
Now we have the X-Men introduced so how do their “solo” movies (if it’s a team movie does it count as a “solo”?) work? Well, that would depend on which villains you want to use. If you want to tackle the Phoenix Saga or even Apocalypse again than those would require some build up. Some villains that you could use could include Magneto again since an X-Men franchise without Magneto is like a Spider-man franchise without the Green Goblin or a Batman franchise without the Joker; it would just be weird. So maybe that can be your trilogy right there! Introduce the X-Men in Infinity Wars Part 1 and possibly tease the Phoenix, the first X-Men film will use Magneto with possible assistance from the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and Mystique while still teasing the Phoenix, the second film will be about the Phoenix, and you can keep teasing Apocalypse as the final villain! Granted the X-Men franchise is so large at this point that they could do pretty much anything they want. They’re stories from Christ Claremont’s run on Uncanny X-Men, there’s Grant Morrison’s New X-Men, Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men run (which could be directed by Joss Whedon since he wrote the comic himself), Rick Remender’s Uncanny X-Force if they really wanted to, ect. etc. etc. I could go on.
In terms of the roster and casting choices, well I’m actually terrible at casting so I’ll just leave that to the writers. However Professor X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Wolverine are all must haves but the roster should be bigger however they could have some creativity in who they choose. I’d like to see Gambit and Rogue done well, Nightcrawler is a favorite of mine, and so long as they go with a more modern badass Shadowcat over the original teenybopper version I’d love to see her! Of course Beast would be a great character to use and Colossus so we can have a fastball special with Wolverine. Angel and Iceman are also great characters to utilize.
Now literally the only problem I see with this is Deadpool. I absolutely loved Deadpool and if the X-Men goes back to Marvel I don’t know what that means for his series. Granted Tim Miller, who directed the first film, left the second film so it might take a slight decline in quality. The MCU could make a Deadpool film but with how good Fox’s R-rated Deadpool film went I highly doubt that fans will want a PG-13 Deadpool and the MCU isn’t even going to attempt an R-rated movie. However, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage are all TV-MA Netflix series and are part of the MCU so maybe we could get an MCU Deadpool Netflix series or movie? I mean if this whole thing works out it could work!
