Everything Wrong With: “Spider-man: One More Day”

Spider-man One More DayHello interweb, Nate here!  So I’m going to try a SuperheroSins article on an actual comic!  One weakness I’ve been noticing about these SuperheroSins is that they primarily rely on YouTube videos for it to work.  Meaning if said YouTube video gets taken down for copyright purposes than the video is no longer on the post for people to use as a reference.  So I thought I’d try to use an actual comic for a SuperheroSins of mine!  Now this is an experimentation as I obviously can’t upload an entire comic book (and to be fair I really shouldn’t have to) but I figured if I read the comic book on my laptop than I can take screen shots of the panels I need and place them when needed.  So why did I decide to do a SuperheroSins on this comic instead of a simple review? Simple!  I absolutely hate this comic and I feel like a simple review would not do this comic justice in just how bad it is.  I’m willing to review bad comics!  However I thought a SuperheroSins would be a better format to pick out everything wrong with this comic.  So let’s begin!

Disclaimer: I do not own Spider-man.  All art and characters are owned by Marvel Comics

Everything Wrong With: “Spider-man: One More Day”!

Spider-man One More Day #1

  • First off I’d would like to remove a sin for just how cool the cover is with Spider-man being tangled up in webs.  However I’d have to give a sin right back for the fact that the three faces behind him makes the cover to busy! +1 -1
  • “What would you do…If you only had….One more day?!” Apparently sit around doing nothing.  You’ll see what I mean +1
Spider-man OMD Pic1

Ch. 1 Pg. 1 Panel 1

  • First line of the comic and it makes no sense whatsoever.  “Tune your ear to the frequency of despair”?  What does that even mean? +1
  • “Cross-reference by the longitude and latitude of a heart in agony”?  What does map coordinates have to do with sound frequency?  And again, what does that even mean? +1
  • “Listen.  Listen.” Kinda hard to listen when this is a comic which we read using our eyes! +1
Spider-man OMD Pic2

Panel 2-4

  • Emo exposition for those of you who didn’t read Civil War or the Amazing Spider-man Civil War tie-ins +1
Spider-man OMD Pic3

Pg. 2

  •  Despite some wonky perspective, this is a genuinely good image here -1
Pg. 3 Panel 4-6

Pg. 3 Panel 4-6

  • Peter thought he could get Aunt May medical care without health insurance or money +1
Pg. 5 Panel 1-5

Pg. 5 Panel 1-5

  • “You have no idea what I’m feeling.” No one has ever lost a loved one before me! +1
  • Also, where did that newspaper come from?  Between the first panel and the fifth panel it looks like it just materialized in his hand. +1
  • Also up til now Peter had been using a fake last name for both him and Aunt May since the end of Civil War turned him into a fugitive.  So if his unmasking means that this doctor knows he’s Spider-man than how does nobody else in the area doesn’t recognize him if Spidey’s a well-known hero? +1
Pg. 6 Panel 1

Pg. 6 Panel 1

  • Remember this panel!  It’ll be important later. +1
Pg. 9 Panel 2

Pg. 9 Panel 2

Pg. 10 Panel 2-3

Pg. 10 Panel 2-3

  • If you and Tony would’ve died than that bottomless check book you wanted would’ve been out the window and Aunt May would’ve been screwed.  Peter Parker is an idiot +1
Pg. 12 Panel 2-5

Pg. 12 Panel 2-5

Pg. 13

Pg. 13

  • Plus one sin for the stupid look on the last panel of Pg 12 +1
  • Minus one sin for how cool that was! -1
  • Also since he gets his web shooters back at the end of this story (and apparently his organic webs are much stronger) this is the first and last time he’ll ever do this +1
Pg. 14 Panel 2

Pg. 14 Panel 2

  • Knowing how strong Spider-man is, that punch should’ve either killed him or done major damage +1
  • Unless that “KLANNNG!” is suppose to signal to us that that punch didn’t break the armor which I call bullcrap because he earlier broke his helmet with a single punch +1
Pg. 15 Panel 1

Pg. 15 Panel 1

  • Earlier you were blaming yourself and then you decided to visit Tony because he’s rich and it’s partially his fault too.  Now you’re moving all the blame over to him?  Stop acting like a dang 6-year old and stop playing this blame game! +2
Pg. 17 Panel 1-2

Pg. 17 Panel 1-2

  • This is stupid for several reasons.  First off, Aunt May isn’t the fugitive!  Peter is! +1
  • Second, heroes help bad guy’s loved ones all the dang time!  That’s what they do!  Sometimes they help their loved ones in exchange for the bad guy to go to jail peacefully but you’re not “aiding a criminal” by helping said criminal’s injured relative! +2
  • And finally, even if Aunt May was the fugitive she’s still suffering from a fatal injury!  Again, heroes help villains out all the time when required.  They save lives regardless of who they are.  If Aunt May was instead an injured Electro, Rhino, Dock Ock, etc. it would still be a heroic thing to do to heal them back to health and send them to jail when they’re fully healed! +3
Pg. 17 Panel 5

Pg. 17 Panel 5

  • So you’ll let the fugitive go free but you won’t lift a finger to help his dying aunt?  Is Tony Stark just lazy?!  +2
  • Did he completely disintegrated all of the webs?  Because I feel like there should still be strands hanging off those balconies on those buildings +1
Pg. 19 Panel 5-7

Pg. 19 Panel 5-7

  • Why does he have a random pic of him with Peter, MJ, and Aunt May taped to his wall? +1
Pg. 21 Panel 6

Pg. 21 Panel 6

  • “I’d sell my soul if I thought it would help her” or your marriage +1
Pg. 21 Panel 2-3

Pg. 21 Panel 2-3

  • Jarvis actually did develop a relationship with May prior to this story so minus one sin for this scene here -1
Pg. 22 Panel 3-4

Pg. 22 Panel 3-4

  • I realize that Pete’s kinda emotional right now but when a doctor says someone’s going to die I don’t think there’s much use arguing with him +1
  • Also I don’t know what it is but that face Peter’s making just doesn’t match the emotion I feel like he should be making.  He looks more tired than angry or upset +1
Pg. 23

Pg. 23

  • Remember earlier when Peter said he wasn’t gonna wear a mask anymore since everyone knew his face?  +1

Spider-man One More Day #2

  • This cover would’ve been a whole lot cooler if Aunt May wasn’t there and you took out some of the dramatic captions +1
  • Said captions covering up part of the title +1
  • Also you had to jump over from The Amazing Spider-man #544 to Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man #24 just to continue the same story instead of just having all four issues featured in the pages of ASM +1
Ch. 2 Pg. 3 Panel 3

Ch. 2 Pg. 3 Panel 3

  • “It is never anything less that brings someone to my door.” So you don’t get mail?  Or order pizza?  Or just have friends come over for a relaxing afternoon?  Dr. Strange, you need friends +1
Pg. 4 Panel 1-2

Pg. 4 Panel 1-2

  • Doctor Strange decides to go over his origin story instead of giving Peter straight forward answer +1
  • Why is the bottom of Peter’s mask rolled up?  Doctor Strange knows Peter Parker is Spider-man so if you don’t want it on take it off +1
Pg.

Pg. 4 Panel 3-4

  • I realize that everyone dies eventually and both Peter and Strange knows this, but he could still use his magic powers to cure her so she has a little longer to live!  Or has every character in this comic become a couch potato? +1
Pg. 5 Panel 1

Pg. 5 Panel 1

  • “Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me!” Seriously that’s what you sound like right now! +2
Pg. 6 Panel 1

Pg. 6 Panel 1

  • ok  BULL!  You’re telling me that Doctor Strange, who can make time and space play dead and treat reality as we know it as his personal play thing, can’t heal a bullet wound?!  And to add insult to injury, he can’t heal a bullet wound but he can send Peter all over the earth to talk to other people from around the globe in hopes of finding someone who can heal her? +3
Pg. 7-8

Pg. 7-8

  • Now I don’t recognize every character here but I’m sinning everyone I know that’s ridiculous. First off Hank Pym, who can create technology that can shrink things to microscopic sizes, but can’t heal bullet wounds +1
  • Dr. Hank McCoy who’s the leading scientist in mutant and DNA studies, but can’t heal bullet wounds! +1
  • Dr. Reed Richards who’s one of if not the most intelligent man in the Marvel universe, but can’t heal bullet wounds! +1
  • Doctor Octopus who can create advance tech, but can’t heal bullet wounds! Granted he may be unwilling to help simply because he hates Spider-man so I’ll let this one pass…
  • Doctor Doom who has mastered magic and science,  but can’t heal bullet wounds!  And unlike Doc Ock this is ludicrous as this Doctor Doom’s ego would love the idea of an enemy coming to him for help.  He’ll want something in return but he wouldn’t back out of something like this! +1
  • Black Panther who’s country is one of the most scientifically advanced in the world – including medical science – but he can’t heal bullet wounds! +1
  • And finally to make things even worse, the writers had to make things ludicrously hopeless by making it so these scientists can’t do anything to help Aunt May when there was a simple way to fix this!  Doctor Strange wasn’t home!  Boom!  Peter would’ve never been able to find him in time and wouldn’t have had the time to reach anyone for help! +3
Pg. 9 Panel 4

Pg. 9 Panel 4

  • Magic and science are two different things!  Tamper with magic without knowing what the heck you’re doing and you’re gonna get killed! +1
  • Also this is followed by a pointless astral projection where he has a flashback of Aunt May getting shot but since he’s in astral form he can’t do anything to change the past.  So why did we waste those pages seeing Aunt May get shot again? +1
  • Also this is followed by another pointless scene where Peter comes out of the astral projection but apparently said astral projection caused to much strain on his body which Doctor Strange needed to heal via magic spells.  So yeah, a whole lot of pointlessness in this issue. +1
Pg. 20 Panel 5-7

Pg. 20 Panel 5-7

  • “Magical cures for magical ills.”  Bullcrap!  Seriously, the amount of effort put into making this situation so hopeless is asinine! +3
  • Also, the art work on that last panel is horrible +1
  • “Yeah, well the day I actually believe that I’ll be sure to let you know” Finally something we can agree on! -1
Pg. 22 Panel 1-4

Pg. 22 Panel 1-4

  • This is actually a very well written speech -1
  • Except Peter isn’t going to follow this advice +2

Spider-man One More Day #3

  • Now we have to jump over from Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man #24 to The Sensational Spider-man #41 in order to continue the story further +1
  • Also, why is Spider-man covering up part of the title?  Couldn’t you lower him on the cover or make him a tad smaller so we can actually see what the title is?  For all I know I could be reading “The Sensational Sp man” or “The Sensational Sr man” +1
Ch. 3 Pg. 1 Panel 1-2

Ch. 3 Pg. 1 Panel 1-2

  • On one hand Spider-man is a well-known superhero so wouldn’t that be kinda like talking to a cop?  On the other hand, Spider-man is a fugitive so she should be more worried about that aspect than the stranger.  And yet again she does acknowledge that Spidey want’s to protect peopl.  Eh, sinning it anyways +1
  • Also, obvious Mephisto girl is obviously Mephisto +1
Pg. 2

Pg. 2

  • Why is she walking like that? +1
Pg. 3 Panel 4

Pg. 3 Panel 4

Pg. 4 Panel 1

Pg. 4 Panel 1

  • That pretty much sums up my biggest problem with Spider-man nowadays!  -3
  • But being self aware about the problem doesn’t forgive it either +1
  • Also notice that Peter didn’t refute these claims either +1
Pg. 4 Panel 4

Pg. 4 Panel 4

  • If this was a picture of Spider-woman’s butt you know people would claim sexism +1
Pg. 5 Panel 4-5

Pg. 5 Panel 4-5

Pg. 6 Panel 1-3

Pg. 6 Panel 1-3

  • First off, did this entire scene call comic book readers losers simply because we enjoy escapist fantasy?  You literally just insulted you’re main demographic! +3
  • Secondly, you design software and video games.  A lot of people would love your job! +1
  • And finally if you wanted to be a hero than become a policeman, firefighter, or doctor.  Those people are heroic in many ways.  You don’t need superpowers to help people, just get off your lazy butt and do something +1

Pg. 7 Panel 4

Pg. 7 Panel 4

  • “It’s not that I don’t drink, it’s just that as a rule I choose not to.” …So you don’t drink.  +1
Pg. 9 Panel 2-3

Pg. 9 Panel 2-3

  • So in other words you’re super rich but you’re not with Mary Jane so you’re life is pointless.  Why do I have difficulty sympathizing with you?  +1
  • Does Peter not notice the magical lightning around him? +1
Pg. 10

Pg. 10

  • Mephisto in drag +1
  • Also, why is Mephisto in drag? +1
Pg. 11 Panel 4

Pg. 11 Panel 4

  • Are they seriously suggesting that Peter didn’t see anything abnormal until just now?  The little girl, the fat geek, the billionaire, and the magic lightning didn’t tip him off?  +1
Pg

Pg. 11 Panel 5

  • I don’t get the “J.R. Ewing” reference but apparently he got the reference wrong +1
Pg. 12 Panel 1

Pg. 12 Panel 1

  • You live in the Marvel universe!  Parallel universes are a scientifically proven fact in your world!  In fact a recent Spider-man storyline, Spider-Verse, was all about your alternate universe versions teaming up against a common foe! (BTW, was not a fan of Spider-verse) +1
Pg. 15 Panel 3

Pg. 15 Panel 3

  • How is it that within infinite realities “nearly all of them” he ends up alone?  I mean if there are infinite possibilities for how Peter’s life could end up than there are two options: he ends up alone or he ends up with someone he loves.  Now correct me if I’m wrong but wouldn’t that mean within infinite realities half of those realities should result in him winding up with someone if that’s half of the options given?  Granted half of infinity is still infinity but let’s not get into the mathematical details.  Point being, that statement is stupid +1
Pg. 16

Pg. 16

  • One, what was the point to being a lady in red to begin with? +1
  • Two, you seriously didn’t realize that that was Mephisto this whole time?  Is this comic’s main priority to make Peter look as dumb as possible? +1
Pg. 17 Panel 1-3

Pg. 17 Panel 1-3

  • Yeah but they still suffer endless torment for eternity +1
  • And yes ladies and gentleman, Spider-man is about to make a deal with the devil! +1
Pg. 19 Panel 1

Pg. 19 Panel 1

  • Why didn’t Mephisto just magically summoned MJ instead of creating this hotel? +1
Pg. 21

Pg. 21

  • Boo!  NONONONONONONONONO!!!! +1
  • First off, Spider-man is seriously making a deal with the devil! +3
  • Second, I realize that Peter’s aunt is like a mother to him and he wants to save her, but MJ is his wife!  I’m sorry but no!  Aunt May has been on the brink of death many times in the past and if Peter acted like an adult than he’d realize that Aunt May is going to die soon anyways so he needs to stick by the woman that he’s suppose to love more than anyone in the world instead of leaving her for a woman who’s about due anyways.  I realize that this is an emotional moment for him but people die, it’s part of life, and you should be a grown up and grieve for her than and then move on with your life like she would want you too! +3
  • Third, 2 issues later in the pages of ASM, Peter’s locking lips with another girl.  So yeah, very torturous and agonizing! +3
  • Forth, you know what would’ve made this an better sacrifice?  If it was MJ who was shot!  Think about it, if MJ was shot than Peter would have to have two choices: have it so they were once married but MJ died, or they were never married and MJ lived!  And to make it worse, make it so Peter remembers their marriage but MJ doesn’t!  That would make much more sense and be much more tragic than this crap!  This just makes Peter look like a 6-year old! +3
  • And finally, SPIDER-MAN MADE A DEAL WITH THE FREAKING DEVIL!!!!!!! +100000000000000000000000000000000 +3

Spider-man One More Day #4

  • This is genuinely a good cover with great symbolism –1
  • Yet again you need to jump over from The Spectacular Spider-man #41 to The Amazing Spider-man #545 just to complete the story +1
Pg 5

Pg 5

  • I legitimately feel sorry for MJ here.  Like honestly, I agree with everything she’s saying here.  Listen to your wife already Peter! -1
Pg. 6

Pg. 6

  • Oh no go ahead, ignore what your wife is telling you to muck around in your own little pity party.  +2
Pg. 7

Pg. 7

  • It’s really sad when the teenager who’s never even been in a relationship before knows that the man whose “happily” married is screwing up so bad that you wanna slug him +3
  • Also, the last two panels have horrible art work.  One sin for each. +2
Pg. 10

Pg. 10

  • And what do they do on their “One more day”?  Do they think back on all the happy memories they had together?  Maybe a few sad memories?  Maybe even think about their time with Aunt May?  Nope! Just slap together the same picture over and over again showing them snuggling together for the last day they have together!  +3
Pg. 13 Panel 2-3

Pg. 13 Panel 2-3

  • Ah yes, I could clearly tell how much he loved her by how he ignored everything she said in this story! +3
Pg. 13

Pg. 13 Panel 4

  • Well at least we’re back to the preferred status-quo! +1
Pg. 15 Panel 1-2

Pg. 15 Panel 1-2

  • Ah yes “Nyraaargh!”.  I could feel the overwhelming emotion in that!  “Nyraaargh!”  +1
Pg. 16 Panel 1

Pg. 16 Panel 1

  • Oh no.  A child you’ll never have because you were never married.  How would you ever- yeah who cares +1
Pg. 19

Pg. 19

Pg. 20

Pg. 20

  • Ok I admit, ending the marriage in the same way that their relationship started is a nice homage –1
Pg. 21 Panel 6

Pg. 21 Panel 6

  • As if Peter and May’s relationship didn’t have enough incestuous undertones, Aunt May now calls Peter “Tiger”!  Ew! +1
Pg. 27 Panel 3

Pg. 27 Panel 3

  • Introducing our next love interest!  Ah yeah, erasing his marriage is clearly putting him through such torture! +1

Final Verdict

Sins: 120

Subtractions: 12

Total: 108

Punishment: Hell! (And divorce!)

Ok, this actually took me a lot longer than I thought.  I read this online and I literally had to take a screen shot and crop the individual panels out before pasting it into the post.  Took me a few hours but I honestly liked how it turned out.  This comic is by far one of the worst Spider-man comics that I have ever read and I’m not alone in this.  It is horribly written, I really didn’t like the art, and none of the characters made any sense.  If you like what you see than vote below to let me know!  Also if you have any suggestions for a story to sin or a way to improve than let me know in the comments below!

    1. Glad you liked it! Doing this with an actual comic I wasn’t sure how well pwople would respond so the positive feedback ia much appreciated!

And yes, the thought process for this story is so head-scratching confusing that it’s a shock that it was even allowed to be published

      1. I definitely enjoyed it a lot, especially with the images for context. I never actually read the trade. It’s on my list, but it’s so bad that I typically just stick to reading about it. It’s a shame that the whole situation was never fully revoked either. At this rate, alter universe stories like Renew Your Vows are the only way we’re going to see this path. I also like how you pointed out how unintelligent Spider-Man was the entire time as well. Not believing in other dimensions and not recognizing Mephisto?….Definitely not his best day.

  1. I have to say before reading this post I had heard about readers not liking One Day More (which I have never read) and I had thought “Oh you cry babies, you just don’t like your plot and comicbook continuum to be changed!” Now, I understand. Wow! Now I agree with everyone complaining up a storm. One of the things that I can’t stand is when characters are “dumb” in situations like these. Or the writer making the character act “dumb” or “blind” just to get to the next plot point. I can see how the writers wrote themselves into a corner but they could have fixed it in so many other better ways. Before I had thought that people just didn’t like the story, now I understand it was more about how the story was told, and plus the story itself.

Normally, I don’t like “Everything wrong with . . .” videos/articles because they are so negative, but I liked how you subtracted sins. The article didn’t seem “bad” negative (if that makes sense), instead a “healthy” negative. It didn’t leave me in a pessimistic mood, which was really nice. I also liked how I could better understand the story line through the screen shots and not just know all the bad things about the story arc but also know the story arc itself. So I’d say that this article was one of the best “Everything wrong with . . ” videos/articles that I’ve ever read.

    1. Wow that’s quite the compliment! I don’t really mind retcons so long as they don’t ruin anything major but when it’s as poorly written as this piece of crap then I obviously have a problem. Hopefully you enjoy my next SuperheroSins! 🙂

  2. This story line betrayed the character of Spider-Man. He would never make a deal with someone like Mephisto. Frankly, the character and the comic book has never been the same and that’s a shame since Marvel didn’t have to go this route to dissolve the marriage. A simple time travel gimmick would have sufficed instead of having Peter Parker corrupt himself over this bargain.

    1. Agreed 100%. So many ways to work around the issue than the way they went. I have been reading quite a few of Dan Slott’s Spider-man comics post Superior Spider-man and it’s ok but the character just acts like a man child half the time. I would really want Bendis or Soule to take over the writing fairly quickly. I think either one of them could fix Spider-man.

      1. That is what bugs me (pun intended) about the recent Spider-Man stuff. He seems stuck as a young adult but is now running around as an irresponsible millionaire. It just doesn’t feel like Spider-Man.

  3. The story could’ve worked if Mary Jane was shot like Linkara said. But instead it was his aunt that gives off so many incest overtones

    1. Well I didn’t see any incestuous undertones until she called Prter “Tiger” but having MJ shot would’ve meant something different. It would be the difference between a dying wife abd essentially a dying mother.
