My Opinion On Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn Movie

Margot Robbie's Harley QuinnHello interweb, Nate here.  So apparently Margot Robbie, who’s playing Harley Quinn in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie, is quote “So not done with playing this character” and Warner Bros. is actually thinking about making a Harley Quinn spin-off movie.  Now this has many fans excited and a lot of people is discussing the possibility.  So since I’m a huge fan of the Harley Quinn character and even wrote a character bio for her (which I really need to go back and fix since the pictures aren’t there for some reason) I figured I’d throw in my two cents on the matter.

Now there are three options that comes to mind when I think of a Harley Quinn movie: 1. Harley Quinn solo movie, 2. Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy team up movie (since those two has had a history with a relationship that goes anywhere from sister-like bond to romantic interests in each other), and 3. Gotham City Sirens since Catwoman is also close friends with the two and they even had a book at one point – written by Paul Dini and lasted 26 issues – called the Gotham City Sirens.  Now I have to admit that I never actually read Paul Dini’s Gotham City Sirens so I can’t really say what type of adventures the trio went on so I’ll need to read it fairly soon to get a good feel for those stories. (Although I have read plenty of Harley Quinn comics – usually written by Amanda Connor – so I know her relationship with Poison Ivy pretty well.)

Gotham City Sirens Birds of PreyNow according to The Hollywood Reporter, this movie isn’t going to be a Harley Quinn solo movie but will feature many of DC’s female characters, as quoted by the link earlier: “In an interesting twist, the project is not a Quinn solo movie. Rather, it would focus on several of DC’s female heroes and villains, with names such as Batgirl and Birds of Prey surfacing.”.  So with that in mind, the first option I mentioned isn’t going to be what they are going for, and to be fair Harley is always best when she has other characters to interact with so that’s fine by me.  While my second option is still possible with this description, I feel almost like my third option is probably what they are planning on going with since that may possibly lead to a Gotham City Sirens vs Birds of Prey movie.  That would not only be fun to watch but may even allow DC to get an edge over Marvel since the only three female characters Marvel has so far are Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and Wasp; and Wasp has yet to actually make an appearance in costume and none of them has their own movies until the Ant-Man and Wasp movie comes out.  So if the Gotham City Sirens features Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman facing off against Batgirl (or maybe Oracle), Black Canary, and Huntress (as well as any other female superhero they chose to throw in the mix) than this can do very well for the female demigraphic.

Gotham City - Sirens Group hugSorry, just really wanted to fit this gif somewhere here, anyways…

The only downside to this film that I can see is that a few of these characters aren’t well know to people who don’t read comics.  I don’t really mean the Gotham City Sirens – since most people know Poison Ivy and Catwoman, and Harley Quinn is being introduced in Suicide Squad – but I’m not sure how well known Huntress or Black Canary are and I’m not to sure how many people (outside comic book readers) knows about Batgirl’s transition to Oracle.  Granted some of those things can be explored within the movie but those are things to keep in mind.  Another thing to consider is how terrible previous female led movies have been in the past such as Elektra, Catwoman, and Supergirl.  Now of course I would like a female led superhero movie to be made since both Marvel and DC has amazing female characters with untapped potential for the big screen, and with DC’s Wonder Woman movie around the corner we might see more and more actual good female led superhero movies pop up (assuming Wonder Woman is a good movie).  However we can’t ignore past mistakes and should be a bit cautious in the making of this film.  If we can make a really good female-led film that that would be amazing and do well for DC and comic book movies/companies as a whole, but if done wrong than this might just be too painful to watch.

So what do you guys think?  Are you guys excited about the possibility of a Harley Quinn spin off movie or do you think DC/WB should look somewhere else?  Comment below for your opinions (cause I’m actually really curious on what other people think) or vote below on the poll.  Also, side note: cast Emma Stone to be Barbra Gordan!

  1. The problem I have with this is DC (and Warner Brothers, its parent company) is going ahead and green lighting spin-off projects, without even waiting to see if Suicide Squad is any good, or at the very least, successful.

    1. Well to be honest Harley Quinn is probably one of the biggest reasons Suicide Squad will succeed so throwing her into a movie with bigger characters (namely Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and Batgirl) would likly draw in a bigger audiencem

  2. That’s still a big if. Batman V. Superman was, if not a dud, a critically panned underperformer at the box office.
I really think DC wants it all, right now, when it comes to a big cinematic universe. But Marvel earned that success, over a period of time and a whole bunch of movies that went and tied in together.

    1. Wll to be fair nobody (outside comic book readers) knew who Iron Man, Black Widow, or Hawkeye was before Avengers so they kinda needed introductions. Everybody knows Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman and the rest of the JL to a somewhat smaller degree so they don’t need as big of introductions.

Honestly they could’ve started their universe out with a Justice League movie and if it was good than it probably would’ve done well. The only problem is Man of Steel was crap and Batman V Superman is apparently crap too (haven’t seen it yet) and really if Batman V Superman was actually a good movie it may have worked.

  3. I think if Gail Simone, Paul Dini, and Greg Rucka give suggestions for the scripts it could work.

My reasons for my choices are this

    1) Gail Simone was the most well known writers for Birds of Prey and knows how to write all female ensembles

    2) Greg Rucka is one of the male writers who is very good at writing interesting and original female characters. Check out his creator owned comic Stumptown for an example. Also his run on Wonder Woman is one of my favorites.

    3) Paul Dini is her co-creator Harley Quinn and would be best to get his seal of approval on her screen interpretation before she get a solo movie.

  4. Also if we get Birds of Prey movie I want Barbara Gordon as Oracle not as a Batgirl. As a big Middle Finger to the Ableist editor that decided that mandated Barbara wasn’t good enough as Oracle.

    1. Are you talking about the New 52 Batgirl comics? Yeah it kinda sucked that she wasn’t Oracle anymore. I’m not sure if that’s ableism though, just can be harder to write a superhero whose confined to a wheelchair.

      1. Maybe not but it sure came off as that to many readers. Who enjoyed that Barbara didn’t angst about the lost of her legs. In the New 52 she came off as whiny once get her ability to walk again. Barbara as Oracle never whined that much if it all that I can recall.

  5. LOVE IT.
Harley’s SUCH a great character but it looks like Warner Bros. are leaning on dumbing down and sexualising wicked women who could beat your ass into the next century. As long as it’s nowhere near as bad as Batman V Superman, we should be fine….. #prayformojo

    1. I don’t know, a lot of times Harley comes of as a psychotic dumb blonde but she is actually quite intelligent. She is a psychiatrist after all! While the trailers kinda shows her as being a psychotic dumb blonde I think she might use that as a way to hide he true intelligence. You know, get people to underestimate her. And the Wonder Woman trailer came out today and she looked anything BUT dumb there. That trailer was kickass!

I haven’t seen Batman V Superman yet but it’s on DVD so maybe soon!

    2. In suicide squad they ruined her character, it was like Margaret robbie playing a physco bubbly girl instead of Harley.

  6. Harley Quinn was always there like wtf don’t people watch cartoon movies? And she was in the tv show birds of prey (THAT WAS HER FIRST APPEARENCE) this new movie directed and written by Zack Snyder JUST like suicide squad.
