Hello interweb, Nate here. So apparently Margot Robbie, who’s playing Harley Quinn in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie, is quote “So not done with playing this character” and Warner Bros. is actually thinking about making a Harley Quinn spin-off movie. Now this has many fans excited and a lot of people is discussing the possibility. So since I’m a huge fan of the Harley Quinn character and even wrote a character bio for her (which I really need to go back and fix since the pictures aren’t there for some reason) I figured I’d throw in my two cents on the matter.
Now there are three options that comes to mind when I think of a Harley Quinn movie: 1. Harley Quinn solo movie, 2. Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy team up movie (since those two has had a history with a relationship that goes anywhere from sister-like bond to romantic interests in each other), and 3. Gotham City Sirens since Catwoman is also close friends with the two and they even had a book at one point – written by Paul Dini and lasted 26 issues – called the Gotham City Sirens. Now I have to admit that I never actually read Paul Dini’s Gotham City Sirens so I can’t really say what type of adventures the trio went on so I’ll need to read it fairly soon to get a good feel for those stories. (Although I have read plenty of Harley Quinn comics – usually written by Amanda Connor – so I know her relationship with Poison Ivy pretty well.)
Now according to The Hollywood Reporter, this movie isn’t going to be a Harley Quinn solo movie but will feature many of DC’s female characters, as quoted by the link earlier: “In an interesting twist, the project is not a Quinn solo movie. Rather, it would focus on several of DC’s female heroes and villains, with names such as Batgirl and Birds of Prey surfacing.”. So with that in mind, the first option I mentioned isn’t going to be what they are going for, and to be fair Harley is always best when she has other characters to interact with so that’s fine by me. While my second option is still possible with this description, I feel almost like my third option is probably what they are planning on going with since that may possibly lead to a Gotham City Sirens vs Birds of Prey movie. That would not only be fun to watch but may even allow DC to get an edge over Marvel since the only three female characters Marvel has so far are Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and Wasp; and Wasp has yet to actually make an appearance in costume and none of them has their own movies until the Ant-Man and Wasp movie comes out. So if the Gotham City Sirens features Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman facing off against Batgirl (or maybe Oracle), Black Canary, and Huntress (as well as any other female superhero they chose to throw in the mix) than this can do very well for the female demigraphic.
The only downside to this film that I can see is that a few of these characters aren’t well know to people who don’t read comics. I don’t really mean the Gotham City Sirens – since most people know Poison Ivy and Catwoman, and Harley Quinn is being introduced in Suicide Squad – but I’m not sure how well known Huntress or Black Canary are and I’m not to sure how many people (outside comic book readers) knows about Batgirl’s transition to Oracle. Granted some of those things can be explored within the movie but those are things to keep in mind. Another thing to consider is how terrible previous female led movies have been in the past such as Elektra, Catwoman, and Supergirl. Now of course I would like a female led superhero movie to be made since both Marvel and DC has amazing female characters with untapped potential for the big screen, and with DC’s Wonder Woman movie around the corner we might see more and more actual good female led superhero movies pop up (assuming Wonder Woman is a good movie). However we can’t ignore past mistakes and should be a bit cautious in the making of this film. If we can make a really good female-led film that that would be amazing and do well for DC and comic book movies/companies as a whole, but if done wrong than this might just be too painful to watch.
So what do you guys think? Are you guys excited about the possibility of a Harley Quinn spin off movie or do you think DC/WB should look somewhere else? Comment below for your opinions (cause I’m actually really curious on what other people think) or vote below on the poll. Also, side note: cast Emma Stone to be Barbra Gordan!
